What is NLP
NLP
is the acronym for Neuro Linguistic Programming and covers a set of techniques and beliefs that are used to help in
someone's personal development. This belief is based upon
the idea that a person's behavior follows a particular structure and it is
this structure that creates a person's perception of the
world. It
was the observations of two wizards, John Grinder and Richard
Bandler, after seeing the results that three magicians, Dr. Milton Erickson,
Fritz Perls and Virginia Satir, had on their clients. Keeping
this in mind, John Grinder and Richard Bandler created replicas
according to the behavioral and linguistic sequences of the
three men, wherein techniques for modeling excellence
in all areas of human achievement and endeavor were applied.
Neuro-Linguistic Programming is
a controversial procedure in therapy and even after three
decades
it is still considered to be scientifically invalid. NLP is considered invalid because it does not regulate or
define the body to follow pre-existing standards, nor has it adopted a professional
code of ethics. NLP follows the philosophy that the
human senses perceive only a portion of the world around them. This is because
experiences, values, and beliefs that humans perceive within a day are generally different from the actual perception of
the world. This is owing to the fact that the human mind tends
to accept the perceptions that it is acting and feeling upon,
instead of accepting the actual perceptions of the real world.
However, with the help of NLP, a person can groom the better
parts of their behaviors to be used in areas that are less
successful. It is also possible to use NLP to model others to
change their behaviors and beliefs, wherein the functioning of the
body are improved. NLP is embodied in a person using hypnotic
techniques wherein a person's method of thinking, learning and
communicating can be changed. With NLP, it proves to make it
easier for a person to communicate better with others and to
gain control on the automatic functions of the neurological
systems.
It
is possible to change these behaviors with the help of different
techniques, including modeling, which is the careful
reproduction of behaviors of people who excel in their
respective fields. NLP focuses on the study of patterns in
successful people in hypnotherapy, family therapy, and gestalt
therapy, then upon adopting these patterns, it is possible to
make a change in a person and adapt general communication
patterns for the better.
With the help of Neuro-Linguistic Programming, people tend to
communicate with much more clarity and learn to expand their
choices. Untapped resources in the body are awakened and used
while blocks in the brain can be changed into springboards. NLP
tends to make a person achieve personal excellence with an
acceleration in competence. It also tends to gain or break rapport
as required wherein new behaviors are generated. People learn how
their patterns affect their perceptions and learn to use
their senses for heightened awareness.
The
main reason NLP is practiced, is to help a person overcome
whatever limiting behaviors that they
possess, that are holding them back. These characteristics could be a fear of failure, a fear
of speaking to a group of people, or perhaps a lack of self-esteem. The world of communication today demands that people
must possess at least a moderate amount of self-esteem to succeed in life.
Therefore NLP is
a good option for people with low self-esteem to
consult an NLP practitioner
for help.
If
you want to learn more about NLP you
can find many books in the self-help section of the bookstores,
or articles and other websites online to help
you employ NLP techniques and tools to overcome your weaker
characteristics. So it can be seen that with the help of NLP, a
person will develop into a better human being. Though NLP
has been criticized, it is a practice that improves a person's
character and well being, mentally and physically.
