What is Hypnosis
Hypnosis is a technique used to achieve a different level of
thinking and perceiving. At this other level, often referred to
as a higher level of thinking, a person becomes aware of the
conscious and unconscious mental and physical processing
occurring within the body. It is strongly believed that such a
heightened awareness of the processes that are taking place
allows changes to those processes to be made using specific
techniques.
Hypnosis and the techniques commonly used in hypnosis are not
without controversy. Hypnosis has been offered as a form of
treatment to those suffering from emotional disorders and
physical conditions for years, but despite the widespread
availability and use of hypnosis as a form of treatment for
emotional disorders and physical conditions, and the documented
benefits had by the many patients who have experienced hypnotic
therapy, the controversies continue. It is hoped that as more
advanced technology is developed which can provide clearer
imaging and mapping of the brain processes that a better
understanding of the positive affects of hypnosis will be
gained.
Hypnosis has been used successfully in the treating of a wide
range of emotional and physical conditions. It has been used to
help people quit smoking, lose weight, reduce anxiety, eliminate
compulsive behaviors, increase memory, improve comprehension
skills, learn to communicate well with others, and even with
pain management for conditions such as arthritis and cancer.
Hypnosis has also been shown to be quite effective in helping
people with heightened fears of dental and medical procedures to
manage their fears and experience less pain from procedures as a
result. It is also useful in the treating of many other
conditions.
In
many states only a licensed or certified person may perform
hypnosis whether it is on a clinical basis or not. While in
other states unlicensed persons may perform non-clinical
hypnosis only. Becoming a hypno-therapist is a viable and
recognized occupation if you are considering entering the field
of hypnotherapy. Programs to become a licensed or certified
hypnosis therapist are becoming more widely available today as
more people are discovering the benefits hypnosis can offer to
people, and their desire for a career in helping others.
Hypnosis is usually performed in a controlled atmosphere in
which relaxation, focused attention, and heightened awareness of
internal processing are encouraged and aided with the use of
specific techniques. Lighting, music, meditation, tensing and
relaxing of muscle groups, memory games, word association and
selective perception exercises are just some of the many
techniques of hypnosis. These are all designed to help a person
become in tune with how they are thinking and feeling and how
that influences their behaviors. Ways in which to change
thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that have become problematic
for the person can then be explored and experimented within a
safe, controlled environment before using these techniques at
home, or on their own.
It
should be remembered that hypnosis deals with the emotional and
functioning processes of the brain. For this reason you should
only permit a licensed or certified hypnotist to hypnotize you
using the more complex techniques of hypnosis. Less complex
techniques can be learned through books and the internet and you
can use these to self hypnotize yourself for such things as
staying calm in difficult moments or to psyche yourself
up before an important work presentation, for example.
There are many benefits to hypnosis that have been experienced
by people from all walks of life, and for a variety of issues.
Even more benefits to hypnosis are being discovered every day.
You should not be surprised to find more and more of the people
you know seeking out hypnotists for the betterment of their
lives.
